Local boozer with a twist
THIS QUIET pub has all the hallmarks of an old man's boozer, but step inside and yo’ll be surprised.
Whitesmiths Arms is tucked down a residential backstreet, behind Guy's Hospital and is in perhaps the most sought after area of Southwark - Borough.
It is yards from both bustling Borough High Street and trendy Bermondsey, so you'd half expect these days that the pub's fate would have gone one of two ways. Either it would have managed to hold out as a local boozer, but as the area became more and more gentrified, it went into decline as regulars moved out and were replaced by city types or students from the hospital, who more than like would have said 'this is really not my tipple.' Or the Whitesmiths would have gone all out to embrace its more gentrified surroundings, keeping its Victorian frontage but creating a gastro interior to win over the new clientele.
The menu has just what you’d expect - proper pub grub, bangers and mash, homemade shepherds pie, beer battered fresh fish and chips, but surprise, surprise, the Whitesmiths has gone all Spanish on us - they also have an international tapas menu. What in a local boozer like this? Never!
We started with bread (fresh - straight out of the oven) Alioli and olives priced £2.50. Then six dishes, Mediterranean vegetables cooked in white £2.75, Spinach & Ricotta pasta in cream mushroom sauce £3.25, mixed seafood pasta £3.75, sliced chicken breast in cream mushroom sauce £3.75, pork fillet in a fresh red pepper sauce £4.25 and prime slices of steak in pepper sauce £4.25. Now this was a feast - too big for three but in total less then £25, around £8 each.
