30 April 2009
Dulwich & West Norwood MP Tessa Jowell met with the recently formed South Southwark Businesses Association last Friday, to listen to traders’ concerns and discuss how to promote local business.
The SSBA meeting, held at Le Chandelier in Lordship Lane, was deemed to be positive and constructive, with the umbrella organisation given full backing by Ms Jowell - who recently became President of the Southwark Chamber of Commerce. She pledged to meet regularly with representatives of the group and offered support in the form of further sessions with senior government adviser, Paul Loughran
Issues that were discussed, and which the SSBA will be taking forward include:
- Safety on streets and in parks, with attention paid to the night time economy.
- Increasing public awareness of the south of Southwark as a tourist destination.
- A keep it local campaign for shops and businesses.
- Rent and rate increases.
- Parking and highways.
Ms Jowell requested that she be copied into all correspondence relating to these issues, as she very much wished to stay 'in the loop' with SSBA activities.
The next SSBA general meeting is on May 6 at 6pm at the Christchurch Centre, Barry Road.
