500 YEARS OF BLACK HISTORY AT ELEFEST

Exhibition: Art in the Subway
Venue: Southern Subways Elephant & Castle, SE1

For the second time, Elefest has taken on the challenge to turn a draughty subway passage into a place to linger and contemplate. This photographic exhibition features work by MA students on London College of Communications Photojournalism and Photography courses, Media Citizens, Castle Arts and local artists. Open all week.

Talk: Elephant and Castle
Venue: Unit 238, Upper Mall, Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre SE1 6TE

Historian Stephen Humphreys has been researching the history of the Elephant for many years, he was born in the former Lambeth Hospital, Brook Drive and his family lived in the area back to the 19th century. He has published many books and booklets on the history of Southwark and is planning to publish another based on this illustrated talk.

Talk: 500 Years of Black South London.
Venue: Unit 238, Upper Mall, Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre SE1 6TE

The recorded Black presence in South London goes back at least 500 years.
This presentation by Steve Martin looks at the lives of Black people of all backgrounds over this period.
From the extremely wealthy coal merchant Caesar Picton to the writer and anti-slavery activist Olaudah Equiano and the hundreds of slaves and servants working in households in this area we will find out what life was like for Black Londoners from previous centuries.
