LYNN JUNIOR Joey Pearson will fight for a London title this weekend after successfully securing the South East championship this week.

The twelve-year-old from Walworth put in an impressive boxing display showing off his new found ringcraft, which has been added to his natural determination to succeed.

Pearson, who typically likes to front on the front foot, has added nous to his skills that has seen him put in some impressive recent performances.

Trainer Samm Mullins said: "He can come forward but we have been teaching him how to box as well because you can't just blow everybody out of the ring. Now you can see he takes his time and works his jab, to go with all that he is a nice kid as well."

The 'News' reported in October that the young fighter had a heart to heart with Mullins following a couple of sluggish displays, but with his new found confidence he is now turning into a consistently good performer.

Mullins added: "He boxed out of his skin and it is the first time he has taken a championship. Now he will go on to fight for the London title.

"The way he has been matched up in the past has not been right and he was not getting the right bouts, but now we have corrected that. It has given him the confidence that he needs and we have let him off the leash, and to be fair to him he is now delivering."

Fellow junior Frankie Newman was also in contention for a South East area title, but lost a bout in the same tournament.

Mullins said of Newman: "He lost the fight but has already been back in the gym this week, which shows that he clearly wants it. That shows he has a really good attitude."
