26 April 2007
For the fourteenth year running, the Dulwich Festival will be taking the south of the borough by storm, with ten days of entertainment and events running between Friday, May 11 and Sunday, May 20.
There are some exciting and unusual themes running through the Dulwich Festival this year, starting with Bookcrossing. This will promote local authors’ books and track the adventures of the books as they pass from reader to reader, being left and found around the area throughout the Festival and beyond.
The Festival also has four premieres being performed by renowned artists, including members of The Gaudier Ensemble giving a London premiere of a new children's concert, Red Riding Hood.
There are plenty of children's events, some free events, four dance styles to be learnt, packed weekends providing excitement for all of the family and plenty of choice. Highlights of the festival will be the popular Ceroc evening, newly introduced Tango/Malonga night, The Swingle Singers, an internationally renowned group come to Dulwich Festival before performing at the Proms later in the season. There are over 50 artists opening their studios for the weekend,
Haydn's Nelson Mass from scratch, literary indulgence with a "Let's think" theme and the children can look forward to many activities including a Bat Walk, Drumming workshop, Circus Skill workshop and a Teddy Bears' Picnic.
The opening event will again be the ever popular Dulwich Festival Debate, which this year will examine the politics of food. They will be joined by, amongst other speakers, Patrick Holden of the Soil Association, a former Dulwich school-boy!. The Dulwich Picture Gallery will be attempting to source all food for the subsequent supper from British food within one hundred miles of Dulwich.
