JAGS NATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPS

A Dulwich school has been crowned English Track and Field champs, having swept to victory in Newcastle last week.

James Allen's Girls' School (JAGS) beat off eleven other opponents from all around the country to secure the team title by 33 points. To secure English Schools Track and Field Cup required the contribution of a fourteen girls, aged between eleven and thirteen, over eleven events.

Yemesi Solofarin scored the most points in a single event, 32 points for her efforts in the discus, but a number of girls doubled up including Rita Otto who picked up a combined 41 points in the 200m and the high jump.

Rhianna Madden-Hansle, who competed in the 200m and the long jump, said: "The last event of the day was the relay.  With the support of the whole team behind them, the relay team successfully ran a personal best time.  As all of the teams sat down for the presentation, butterflies were in all of our tummies."

Before the national finals in Newcastle the girls had to come through two qualifying sections, and they carried their fine form right through the competition.

High Jumper and sprinter Francesca McClymont, commenting on the teams' victory, added: "The excitement and shock was overwhelming.  This was the first time that JAGS had ever won, we had made history."
