BUSINESS NEED TO JOIN TOGETHER TO MAKE REAL CHANGES IN CAMBERWELL

The people behind a new Camberwell Business Forum have stated businesses must have a strong voice if they are going to affect how the area will change in the future.

The second meeting of the forum was held last Wednesday at the Pasha Hotel in Camberwell Road, and Barbara Pattinson, chair of the SE5 forum which runs the event, has stated businesses are vital in the development of the area in the medium and long term.

The regular meetings allow shop owners and entrepreneurs to meet up and exchange ideas in an informal environment, as well as allowing those involved to air their problems and discuss possible solutions.

Ms Pattinson said: “I was delighted with the turnout and what was good about the night was there were lots of new faces from the Camberwell Road part of the area, which was good to see.

“It is still early days, but I think the businesses that are involved so far are looking to have a strong voice which is focused and can effect a change. I think that the Camberwell Business Forum lends itself to providing that.”

The SE5 forum chair feels that if the business forum can reflect the eclectic range of shops from all over the area, they will form a formidable lobbying group who can mould how the area changes.

Ms Pattinson added: “The SE5 forum already has an input into the areas travel plan, the Area Action Plan and other documents which will shape the area.

“It’s important the support for businesses and business development is mentioned in these documents because they can play an important role in the way Camberwell can improve.”

Being on the borders of both Southwark and Lambeth means businesses have even more reason to join, according to Ms Pattinson, as they can exchange experiences with both councils and work with them to develop cross border initiatives that are aimed to cut out red tape.
