STANSFELD SEE-SAW ENDS IN A DRAW

1 September 2008

Bromley Green 3 Stansfeld 3

STANSFELD MANAGED to salvage a draw with a last minute penalty, but manager Danny Steele was a far from happy man after seeing his team throw away a winning position for the second successive week, due to defensive blunders.

Stansfeld started the better side and could have taken the lead in the 15th minute when Harry Mahoney broke through but was off target with his effort. Ten minutes later and Jamie Turner danced his way through the Bromley Green defence, avoiding three tackles before shooting towards the top corner, for what looked like a certain goal; but somehow the keeper got a hand to it and turned it over for a corner. After dominating the whole half Stansfeld went in at half-time level.

Three minutes after the restart and Stansfeld were in front thanks to a Jamie Turner 25yard thunderbolt, that flew into the bottom corner. Two minutes later Stansfeld doubled their lead when Joe Bacon met a Terry Forsyth freekick and powered a header into the net. It looked like the flood gates were about to open but a defensive lapse allowed Bromley Green back into the game, a hopeful punt up field caught the Stansfeld defence square, Sid Mitchell gave the ball away, Ricky Ward in the Stansfeld goal came rushing out from his area, but was beaten to the ball by the Bromley Green forward who went around him and knocked the ball into the net. Within minutes Bromley Green were level. A cross from the right and a mistake by Neil Thurgood  saw Ricky Ward racing from his line to collect, but a Bromley Green player got there first and headed into the unguarded net.

Five minutes later and the Stansfeld defence was in tatters, trying to play the offside trap near the half way line, which allowed the Bromley Green centre forward to race through and slot the ball pace the advancing Ricky Ward.
Stansfeld had 20minutes to get something from the game, pushing men forward. Stansfeld had all the play but were denied three close penalty calls by the referee. Stansfeld hit the post, had a shot cleared off the line and the Bromley Green keeper made a couple of good stops. It looked their luck was out, but two minutes from time the pressure paid off. Stansfeld were awarded a penalty after Joe Bacon was brought down in the box. Sid Mitchell stepped forward and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

After the game Danny Steele told the ‘News’: “We have to stop the individual mistakes otherwise it will be a long hard season for our team. Stansfeld came away from the game knowing that this wasn't a point gained but two points lost.”
