Stansfeld 0 Phoenix 1
STANSFELD SLUMPED out of the inter-regional cup at the first hurdle with a below par performance against local rivals Phoenix Sports at Mayplace East.
Although suffering from injuries to key players Manager Danny Steele wouldn't use that as an excuse for their early exit from the inter-regional cup. Stansfeld started slowly and found it hard to up their performance against a strong Phoenix side who were working hard and closed Stansfeld down early at every opportunity. In this dull first half it was left to skipper Neil Thurgood and midfield enforcer Tony Saunders to keep Stansfeld afloat in the first half.
In the second half Stansfeld started brightly and nearly took the lead within two minutes of the restart; a good move between Paul Hewett and Jamie Turner found Danny McKone in space who's snap-shot just went over the bar. In the 50th minute Phoenix took the lead, from a free kick the ball was knocked in and as the ball bounced around a Phoenix forward quickly stabbed the ball home. Facing defeat Stansfeld began to improve and in the 65th minute Stansfeld had their first shot on target from Terry Forsyth who skipped past two challenges and shot from fifteen yards which forced the Phoenix keeper into a smart save.
Despite putting Phoenix under more and more pressure Stansfeld couldn't find a clear opening to get back on level terms and made the short journey home empty handed.
