THE ‘NEWS’ asks you what you think of the day’s issues.
Interview by Emanuel Nordrum
ANNE BEGUE, 47, HEALTH TRAINER, EAST DULWICH
What's your favourite thing about Southwark?
Living in East Dulwich. Because it's residential and it's nice and quiet. It's not a "problem area", and I'm a bit of a snob.
What's your favourite place in Southwark?
I'm going to be prejudiced: I'm going to say Lordship Lane and Dulwich Park.
What's the one thing you would change about Southwark?
The one thing I would change about the borough would be to change Rye Lane and turn it into how it was 20 years ago. It had lots of lovely shops, Marks & Spencer, there was a departmental store - this is 30 years ago now - it was really nice. I think the reason it changed was Eurostar coming through. Everybody panicked and all the big stores left Rye Lane. Everything changed.
Primary school pupils should be taught how to be happy, a government report says. How would you teach someone to be happy?
I'd start with the parents, really. Because I find that a lot of parents are not really fulfilling their responsibilities at home, and they're just leaving the schools to do everything. Parents need to get their act together. If they're not happy with themselves, how can we expect their children to be happy?
Today is set to be Britain's busiest shopping day online, with some £320 million spent. Do you shop online?
I don't buy anything online. I just don't trust getting my details online. Our details are everywhere and anybody can access them, but I personally don't want to buy anything.
The mother of an eight-year-old has refused to let her daughter attend school for nearly a month now because the school would not let her wear earrings. How should they sort out the situation?
Obviously if it's a safety issue. If it's big hula hoop earrings and they might get caught in something, fair enough. But I think if they're quite discreet little studs, there's nothing wrong with that. And I don't think the school should ‘ban’ a child just for wearing earrings.
Protesters were arrested at Stansted airport after forcing the runway to close for two hours. Do you think their actions will help combat climate change in any way?
There are other ways of protesting, and I think stopping me from getting on a flight for a holiday is not one of them. Why don't they go stand outside their MP’s house in protest?
