COST RAIL

22 January 2009

HEATHROW, PADDINGTON, Whitechapel and Woolwich - all historic Southwark landmarks that make up part of this proud borough. Or at least you might be forgiven for thinking this.

For, hot on the heels that City Hall won’t fund the cross river tram, now comes the announcement that the Elephant & Castle regeneration scheme could be billed for Crossrail. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Why should we be expected to foot some of the bill for a scheme that doesn’t come anywhere near us?

There is something to be said for a holistic approach to regeneration and the planning of major transport improvements. That’s why we and many others in the community have long argued that it was a nonsense for the backers of the Thameslink scheme through Borough to ignore the Elephant project just minutes down the road. This was all ignored by Network Rail, and indeed by the government, which supported the destructive scheme from the outset.

But now Crossrail looks to be costing a bit too much, Elephant is suddenly back in the picture, with a spokesperson for the Mayor gravely reminding us all of how developments that contribute will benefit.

How so exactly?
