25 June 2008
THE SOUTHWARK Community Games team have had a very busy few months and are now gearing up for an exciting and fun-packed summer with the young people of Southwark.
So far, the team have held a very successful Community Sports Leaders Award at Southwark College for local residents and students of the college. The course aims to provide and train them in leadership and sport skills and to provide opportunities for some, of paid work with the team.
The Southwark Community Games team have also recently ended their successful schools programme of Urban cricket in over 45 primary schools. This week sees a series of preliminary events for each Community Council area taking place at venues around the borough. Each day promises to be an exciting event and is the accumulation of a 6-week programme of cricket coaching across the borough. The main event is the Grand final on Wednesday 25th June at Burgess Park Community Cricket Pitch and it is here that the best school in each Community Council area will battle it out for the title of Southwark Community Games 2008 Urban Cricket winners. They will also have the chance to compete in the Surrey Kwik Cricket Tournament representing Southwark.
As well as delivering our estate programme in over 40 venues across Southwark, the team have also been busy recruiting two new members of staff to fill the two vacant head coach roles. The successful candidates where Sayce Holmes -Lewis, who will now work in Walworth and Borough & Bankside, and David White who will now work in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. We would like to welcome them to the team and wish them every success in their new areas.
Finally the 2008 Summer programme is drawing near, on the 28th July 2008 a three week action packed programme will be rolled out, as usual across the borough with multi sport activities (rugby, cricket, football and athletics) taking place in each Community Council area from Monday to Thursday. During the fourth week of the programme tournaments will be held on each day in a different council area for each of the 4 sports, with points being recorded and added to the years total for each Community Council area. The winners of Southwark Community Games 2008 will be announced at the end of the year in a grand closing ceremony.
