SCG coach Peter Evans with future young rugby stars at Burgess Park
SOUTHWARK COUNCIL'S ever expanding community sports and physical activity programme, Southwark Community Games, has now progressed from the highly successful 'Summer of Sport 2008', with a programme of rugby coaching within Southwark Schools.
The Southwark Community Games, School Tag Rugby programme 2008 is an eight week extravaganza of sports coaching in over 53 local primary schools across Southwark, with over 60 hours of coaching every week.
The Southwark Communtiy Coaches teach the school children a specially adapted non-contact version of the competitive sport called Tag Rugby. Each child wears two Tags, attached by Velcro to a belt worn around the waist, when one Tag is torn lose from an opponent this constitutes a 'tackle'. This method avoids the need for contact and therefore almost completely eliminates harm and injury to the children.
The programme began on the 22nd September 2008 and runs until the Grand Final on Wednesday 3rd December 2008. If your school is not taking part and you would like to play rugby outside of school then come down to our tag rugby session at Burgess Park Astro turf. The session is run on a Thursday night from 4-6pm in conjunction with Southwark Tigers Rugby club who train on Sundays from 10:30am-12:30pm.
As well as rugby sessions our "autumn of sport" programme is running in over 47 venues across the borough, up until October half term. These sessions are free to attend and for more information about SCG and how you can get involved in your area, check out the website:
