A Rotherhithe businessman has taken the plunge in the midst of recession and opened a new supermarket.
The venture is also set to help the borough's sick children, as some of the money spent will be donated to the Evelina Children's Hospital.
On the site of the former job centre on Brunel Road, the shop is owned by Mohammed Faraz, who also has the Londis opposite.
Mr Faraz said told the 'News' he was excited to be opening his second and much bigger shop.
"Save money, save time and shop local," he said.
Locals hope that business in the area will increase from next year, as the Rotherhithe overground station is on time and on budget to open in May 2010. The idea of a Scandinavian market has also been raised for Albion Street by Southwark Council, as part of its plan for the borough's markets.
Cutting the ribbon outside the shop, funeral director and local businessman Barry Albin-Dyer said it was a fantastic idea.
Mr Albin-Dyer said: "When I was born you didn't have supermarkets. This kind of venture is exactly what this area needs. Someone investing in the community like this is quite brave.
"It's a fantastic idea," he said.
Also cutting the ribbon, North Southwark and Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes, said he was pleased to see the local man open a new store.
Mr Hughes said: "There are business opening, not closing. Small businesses are hanging on."
The new shop will be open from 8am to 10.30pm everyday and is giving the copies of the 'News' away for free today.
