THE LATEST edition to Southbank’s restaurant scene, The Wine Theatre, is set to revolutionise the idea of 'bar snacks', writes David Yuill...
The restaurant cum wine bar has introduced the Mediterranean-inspired 'authentic aperitivo'. Defined as a 'civilised gathering over small plates of food', the tapas-style aperitivo is pretty much the continent’s answer to our couple of pints and a packet of pork scratchings.
The small dishes arrive with a large glass of wine at a cost of £8-per-person. An array of cheeses, charcuterie (cured hams), canapés, vegetables, breads, salads and a range of hot and chilled pastas then arrive in unlimited supply. Each additional glass of vino is then charged at menu price.
The eaterie is also able to offer all 95 of its wines from around the world by the glass having adopted the Enomatic wine preservation system from London's Bibendum restaurant.
The restaurant is the first London venture of a team of Italians who have headed up food at Harrods for over a decade.
Just stumbling distance from Southwark tube station and near some of the best food markets in the world; Borough, Smithfield and Billingsgate, TWT says it has already proved a massive hit with locals, tourists and businessmen alike.
There is also an a la carte menu available for both lunch and evening dinner which offers dishes such as Sorrento lemon risotto, king prawns and pan-fried sea bass among the choices.
