RIO PLAQUE IS REPLACED

12 December 2008

THE BLUE Plaque for Man Utd and England Footballer Rio Ferdinand has been taken down - but only to be replaced with one that has a more accurate description of why it was placed on the Friary Estate.

Rio was awarded the honour, which is voted for by the people of Southwark, in 2003 when the scheme was launched by the 'News' in conjunction with Southwark Council and Southwark Heritage Association.

However the original description on the plaque of 'Peckham Born Football Legend' was deemed to be inadequate as it did not state why the honour was positioned where it was.

The original plaque has now been taken down and replaced with one stating 'Peckham's Football Legend who lived on the Friary Estate' instead.

Ferdinand is a regular visitor to the area, and is currently putting together a documentary about the place of his birth and the issues it faces.
