You are here: Southwark \ Health & Fitness \ BOX YOUR WAY INTO 2008
7 January 2008
Getting ten bells knocked out of you may not appear to be the wisest way to get fit, but the sweet science of boxing really is an accessible sport for all people, writes John Prendergast...
It's not all about winning belts, as Bermondsey’s David Haye did last year when he conquered the world. It can be an amazing way to keep fit, and also instil some discipline into your life. Who knows, you may take to it and want to take part in some competitive bouts, but if you don't there are gyms in Southwark that will accommodate you, so it is possible to get that amazing body, without the crooked nose and cauliflower ears.
At the fitness level the two best clubs to pop along too are Fitzroy Lodge and Gleason's Gym. Both offer classes for men and women that incorporate all the training routines that condition some of the best athletes in the world.
But they are not just fitness clubs - both train boxers at amateur and professional levels and they share the same gym space with guys keeping fit, so it's gives you a feel of a genuine boxing environment.
Fitzroy Lodge also dabbles in White Collar Boxing, where members of the corporate world take part in encounters at lunchtime and after work, so it pulls in people from all walks of life.
The real stalwart boxing clubs in Southwark are Fisher, Lynn and Honor Oak Boxing clubs. All are well established in churning out amateur champions for many years now, and Lynn lays claim to being the oldest boxing gym in the country.
Lynn and Fisher do accept some keep fitters but they, like Honor Oak, are always seeking to add to their people to their ranks who want to take part in the competitive side of the sport. While David Haye learnt his trade at Fitzroy Lodge, it is at Honor Oak where you will find his brother James.
It isn't just adults they are looking for. They all have a well established record in junior boxing. So you could pop along with your kids and join the respective sections of the club.
If you are looking to go competitive you will have to take part in a trial period, and if you fancy it then you or the kids will get all the coaching they need, fully to develop their talents.
2007 was a vintage year for British Boxing, and our boy Haye fully played his part. So whether you are looking to follow in his footsteps, or just lose that Christmas gut, then one of Southwark's many boxing clubs may be what you are looking for.
