Southwark Council's groundbreaking community sports and physical activity programme, the Southwark Community Games, has now progressed from the highly successful 'Summer of Sport 2007', with a programme of Rugby coaching within Southwark Schools.

The Southwark Community Games 'School Rugby Coaching 2007 programme involves:

• 67 Southwark Schools;
• Over 1800 Southwark school children;
• Over 80 hours coaching per week across all schools;
• 8 weeks Rugby coaching;

The Southwark Community Games 'School Rugby Coaching 2007' Programme is the largest intra-school coaching programme ever undertaken in Britain by any local authority. The programme follows on from last year's Rugby coaching in schools but has doubled in size in terms of schools involved and children participation.

Tim Hetherington, Southwark Community Sport Team Manager commented, "It is a groundbreaking programme and we have met and conquered many challenges along the way. We have ten excellent Community Sports Coaches that are proving a true inspiration to both teachers at the schools and the young people of Southwark".

The Southwark Community Sports Coaches teach the school children a specially adapted non-contact version of the competitive sport called Tag Rugby. Each child wears two Tags, attached by Velcro to a belt worn around the waist, when one Tag is torn lose from an opponent this constitutes a 'tackle'. This method avoids the need for contact and
therefore almost completely eliminates harm and injury to the children.
