FIVE OF Surrey's brightest young stars have been given extended contracts as the club rebuild for the 2009 season.
Despite a disappointing year which ended with the side's relegation from the LV County Championship Division One, some of the young cricketers at The Oval did provide a glimmer of light in 2008.
All-rounder Matthew Spriegel, and batsman Chris Murtagh and fast bowler Stuart Meaker have already made inroads in to the first team, with Spriegel's performances particularly catching the eye.
Meanwhile Laurie Evans and Arun Harinath have impressed with their displays for the second eleven.
All five are past members of the club's Pemberton Greenish Academy programme. Academy director Gareth Townsend says their progress is proof that his work is bearing fruit.
"Though we have endured a disappointing season, the positive progress of Jade Dernbach and Matthew Spriegel in the first team this year highlights the quality players that are emerging from the PG academy programme," said Townsend.
"The announcement by the Club in offering these contracts to our young players is further testament to the faith that Surrey are showing in home grown players"
Spiregel, Evans, Meaker and Harinath have been rewarded with two year contracts, while Murtagh has signed for a further year.
