SURREY LEFT STARING DOWN RELEGATION IN THE FACE

19 September 2008

Hampshire beat Surrey by
an innings and 122 runs

SURREY WERE all but relegated from the LV County Championship Division One after suffering an innings defeat to Hampshire at the Brit Oval last week.

A Nick Pothas century and 99 from the big-hitting England all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas saw the visitors rack up 480 in their first innings.

A 61 from the ever-reliable Mark Ramprakash could not stop the Brown Caps from facing the follow-on, and a sorry second-innings display with the bat saw them dismissed for 148.

With just one game left, Surrey find themselves sixteen points adrift at the foot of the table, and a win for either Lancashire or Yorkshire in either of their two remaining games would seal their fate this week.
