BY AND large, Southwark Police seem to be winning the battle against crime in this borough, so what a shame when they drop the ball with something so ridiculous that it makes the whole force seem inept.

An upright citizen finds €600 of travellers’ cheques in a Rotherhithe street and takes them in to the local police station. To his astonishment, he claims that when he tried to give them to someone on the front desk, they were pushed back to him, and he was informed that the person couldn’t help as they were on their own and didn’t have the right paperwork to process it.

'What am I supposed to do with them? Throw them back on the street?' he told us he inquired. ‘He said: 'Yeah, if you like.'’

While the police have promised an inquiry, if this incident is true - and there is no reason to believe it is not - then it is a huge embarrassment to our local coppers. We do want our police out there fighting crime and tackling serious incidents. But we also have a right to see our police, and all their employees, as people we can rely on to help us with all sorts of situations - particularly finding money. So what kind of message does this send out to people who are trying to be law abiding citizens?
