BUSINESS BRIEFS

31 March 2011

The new headquarters of  PricewaterhouseCoopers at More London will be powered by 6,000 litres a week of recycled cooking oil.

Returning to the borough four years after their former headquater Southwark Towers was bulldozed to make way for the Shard, this accountancy power house is determined to show off its green credentials.

The recycled cooking oil will come from restaurants, bars and businesses in central London locations, so the carbon footprint for moving the oil does not overwrite the carbon engery being saved. The oil will be taken to Uptown Biodiesel’s nerby refinery off Borough Road in SE1.

Over 45,000 litres of cooking oil will be sourced per month, equivalent to the oil needed to fill 9,000 average domestic deep fat fryers.

The tri-generation facility will use 100 per cent biofuel and is the largest installation of its type in a commercial office building in the UK.

The oil will be used to fire two large generators, creating a quarter of the electricity needed for the building, as well as 20 per cent of its heating and cooling. Overall, 25 per cent of the energy needed in the building will be generated on site.

SE5 Forum have written a Vision for Camberwell as part of a consultation to improve the area for local businesses.
The forum is asking local businesses to take part, go to www.se5forum.org and send your comments to barbara@se5forum.org by Monday 4th April.
