The Market Porter

IF YOU'RE a real ale afficionado, or simply looking to experience a traditional working market pub, then The Market Porter, located right next to the historic and world-famous Borough Market is just what you're looking for, writes Charlie Breslin…
The drinks
The Market Porter is famed for having one of the biggest selections of real ale in London. At any one time they serve eleven different ales, from a selection of between 50 and 55 each week. While the selection of beers can change up to nine times a day, Harvey's is the popular, regular ale on sale.
The food
The bar menu features typical traditional pub grub, offering everything from sirloin steak (£9.95) or cod and chips (£7.75), to panini, sandwiches and salads (from £3.75). The upstairs restaurant offers a varied range of fancier foods, primarily sourced from the nearby Borough Market, taking advantage of seasonal produce change. The average main course will set you back around £10, while lighter meals are around £6.00-£9.00.
The room
The Market Porter looks and feels exactly as you'd expect a traditional market pub to, with warm, soft lighting and low, beamed ceilings. The pub's recent refurbishment has enhanced the traditional Victorian decor with rustic wooden floors and panelling.
The feel
Depending on when you visit, The Market Porter can provide you with a number of vastly different pub experiences. Ideal for a traditional pub lunch or a relaxed evening meal, The 'Porter' is also perfect for a quiet afternoon drink, to unwind after work, or to bask in the excitement of the crammed Market days.
The Manager Sarah Nixon
Borough Market is so vibrant at the moment. It's very busy here, but it's a great atmosphere to work. There's a great mix of locals and tourists. I love working here.
The Barman Filipe Campanha
I haven't worked here for long, but I already really like it here. I like the unusual beers we serve, and the regulars are all really friendly.
The Regular Adrian Knowles
My favourite thing is the variety of beers. There's always something new to try. It has a cracking atmosphere, and staff are really friendly.
