A vicious attack on a woman in her eighties, which left her with a dislocated shoulder and too afraid to return home, just makes you ashamed to have people who would do this sort of thing in our midst.
Margaret Watson, a great-grandmother aged 82, was attacked in broad daylight in the Old Kent Road, with the robber making off with her handbag, which contained around £200, as she’d just collected her pension. Margaret pleaded with him not to hurt her – but as she said, ‘he knocked me for six’.
For an old lady to be attacked in this way, it not only puts her life at risk, but also makes it incredibly difficult for her to return home. Quite understandably she is talking about moving out to Kent – just to get away from what has happened to her. And who can blame her?
If society has changed so much that women in their eighties are ‘fair game’, then no wonder that more and more people are trying to escape from what used to be a closeknit inner city community.
