You are here: Southwark \ Food & Drink \ Bar Fly \ THE CHARLES DICKENS
9 May 2011
The Charles Dickens free house is a classic ye olde worlde pub, with traditional furnishings and a comfortable rustic interior, writes Charlotte Galt...
It’s got that good old Borough pub feel without all the overcrowding that can ruin a post market pint. Wednesdays are given over to quiz nights, and the beer garden out the back is a sanctuary in the sun.
The Drinks
There are the usual bottled beers, wines and spirits, but the Dickens is a CAMRA pub and really excels at guest ales. Changed every week so the discerning drinker can enjoy a variety, they’re always a hit with the customers.
The Food
With meat from Smithfields and fruit and vegetables from Borough Market, the Dickens gets a gold for supporting local traders.
The food melds well with the environment. It’s proper pub grub – from scampi and chips to beef and ale pie, and a little adventurism with the cod and chorizo fishcakes. Weekends are busier with people making the most of the Sunday roast served 12-6pm.
The Room
There are the usual dark wooden tables and chairs you’d expect in a classic English pub, with a few high stools around pillars and the bar. The walls are decorated with old style artefacts and paintings, all in keeping with the theme.
The Feel
Cosy and spacious with a good variety of seating. It’s a good place for a pint and paper or a relaxed lunch with friends.

Silvya Yovanova - Barmaid
The people who come here are lovely - I’ve worked here six years and we’ve never had any trouble. Its a very friendly, traditional place, and it’s like a second home for me.
Phil Minchinton - Regular
You could say that I’m a great connoisseur of local pubs, and this place has a good atmosphere, friendly bar staff and quality beer. What more do you need?
Claire Senior - Customer
The music is not too loud so you can have a good conversation and the food is good too - especially the chips!
