6 February 2009
An alleged mugger who is said to have attacked a woman less than five minutes from her home told police "I don't do robberies; I'm a shoplifter," a court heard last week.
Simon Robinson, from Talfourd Place in Peckham, was accused of robbing a woman of her handbag and purse near East Street on January 26. He denied the charge at Tower Bridge Magistrates’ Court, claiming it had been a case of mistaken identity.
The victim had left her friend's house near to where the alleged attack took place at around 6pm to walk the short distance home.
The 39-year-old was alleged to have stamped on the face and stomach of the woman, who identified him after seeing him on a nearby street the next day.
The court heard she saw his face as he walked away with his hood down, but Robinson claimed he was not the mugger.
He was remanded in custody to await his trial at Inner London Crown Court on April 2.
DJ Stone told the defendant he was being held because he feared he "would commit further offences and fail to attend court."
