The Dog House
293 Kennington Road
SE11 6BY
JUST FIVE minutes walk from Kennington tube The Dog House is a friendly, cosy, old-fashioned Victorian pub, writes Alison Patel...
THE DRINKS
It does the usual lagers, ales and a good selection of wine. You can also find organic wine, which is supposed to make your hangovers less severe.
THE FOOD
The food is described as gastro, but with pub portions and prices. They sell the usual burgers and fish and chips (£8) along with more healthy options such as lamb skewers and salads (£5). They also do a Sunday Roast, voted by the Guardian as the fifth best pub roast in the country!
THE ROOM
The pub has big wooden tables and comfy chairs. It has a slightly dilapidated feel to it but in a way that makes you comfortable and encourages you to settle in for the evening.
There is a main bar and then a little side bar, which is good if you'd like somewhere a little bit quieter to enjoy a drink.
The pub has live music on Sundays provided by Kennington Rocks but Gently, with some international artists.
They have a funk/house DJ there once a month and occasional exhibitions of local artists.
THE FEEL
Its charm comes from the fact that it isn't trying too hard. The staff and ambience make you feel welcome and relaxed. It has a sense of slightly faded glory but that just adds to its charm.
The Manager Vance Locking
There's an eclectic mix of people that drink here. We get suits, musicians, artists and politicians. It's a well-behaved crowd and people just come to enjoy themselves.
The Barwoman Camila Ribeiro
It's a great place to work, with lots of interesting people.
The Regular Kevin Doolittle
It's a nice, friendly pub with good beer and great food.
