Five pirate radio stations rallied to support people affected by the Sumner Road fire, collecting hundreds of donations from all over the capital.

The stations decided they needed to jump to the aid of those left in temporary accommodation and collected 300 bags of donations over the weekend.

The bags, which were dropped at the Damilola Taylor Centre, in Cator Street, last Sunday, contained clothes, toiletries, a TV and toys for families who have been devastated by the effects of the blaze.

The appeal was co-ordinated by Danny Tammuz, of Lightning Radio, who said: "People really came together for this one. We put the appeals out on the radio and the response was more than we expected.

"We hoped to move stuff in cars, but in the end we had to hire a van. People were coming from all over London to donate what they could. Everybody came together and were picking things up and dropping them off. It was an overwhelming response, especially considering it was from just Friday to Monday.

"The shops along Rye Lane were generous and Burger King even supplied us with some hot meals for the people. One cardiologist came to us and gave £100 and an elderly woman from Hackney came down to Real McCoy in Brixton, to drop off bags of clothes. It was closed when she got there so she called us and we whizzed down and picked up her stuff, so she did not have to lug it to other drop off points."

Uppercuts Barber Shop on Nunhead Green, Maestro Records in Rye Lane and the Real McCoy clothing shop in Brixton were used as drop off points and were full with donations.

Addo Jahtata, of Peckham based Galaxy Radio, stated: "This happened on our doorstep and we had to do something, and people really wanted to do something as well."

Courteney Millanaise, of Vibes Radio, added: "There is a really good community spirit out there, and people always welcome others with open arms when it is needed."

Two other stations, Ontop and Genesis, took part in the appeals and in making sure the goods reached the Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham safely over the weekend.
