There is one date in the corporate calendar that proves just how much the City has jumped across the river to the banks of Southwark - and that is the annual London City Scrum Rugby Tournament.
Organised by leading international legal group Norton Rose LLP, this major event sees all the top City firms battle it out on the rugby field at the Honourable Artillery Company in the square mile, in the hope to pick up the City Scrum Cup and Plate.
Thirteen corporate giants from the square mile and Canary Wharf, including Barclays, Citi, Credit Suisse, and JP Morgan, will be taking on two of our major corporate heavyweights, Ernst & Young and Norton Rose itself.
Both have made their headquarters in the new More London business area around London Bridge, next to Mayor Boris Johnson’s City Hall.
The event is the only touch rugby tournament to take place in the City of London. This year will be the fourth consecutive year that the event has been held and organised by Norton Rose. As you’d expect, this global powerhouse does not do things by half and has recruited top names from Harlequins RFC to coach each of the teams.
The action kicks off on Tuesday, March 22 at 10am with the 40+ tournament, 1pm for the main tournament, culminating in the final at 6pm, where two teams will battle it out to be the winners of the 2011 City Scrum Cup.
In addition to the main tournament, there will be a mini 40+ tournament, where seven teams will battle it out for the City Scrum Vase. These teams include Ark Underwriting, Barclays, Citi, Norton Rose LLP, QBE, StrattMet, and Thomson Reuters.
Money will be raised on the day for two designated charities: ‘Right to Play’ a sports educations programme that helps children in 20 of the most deprived countries in the world; and children’s cancer charity Barretstown.
To attend, spectators must RSVP by Monday, March 14, to CityScrum@nortonrose.com, or go to www.nortonrose.com
