6 October 2008
IF YOU'RE looking for a hidden gem to while away the hours with the Sunday papers, you may want to pop down to Camberwell's latest addition - an ornate, welcoming gastro pub called The Cambria.
The venue is on Kemerton Road - tucked away behind Ruskin Park, and was previously a well worn local boozer.
New owners Steve and Aimi have been friends and work colleagues for many years, with Aimi, an accomplished chef, previously running her own kitchen at The Mansion in Norwood, as well as installing and setting up kitchens in businesses all over London. Steve has recently returned from Greece where he has lived and worked for ten years, has a career in bar and restaurant development and was the owner of a successful nightclub in Brighton until around the turn of the millennium.
The Cambria offers a quintessentially English menu using locally sourced ingredients with a continental twist, with some eyecatching mains including pan seared breast of wood pigeon with caramelised baby leeks, Gloucester Old Spot sausages with creamy mash, braised red cabbage and spiced apple chutney, and Indian thalis - beef and mushroom, or pumpkin and green bean curry. An extensive wine list has been carefully constructed to accompany all dishes on the menu - a cocktail menu is also available to match all moods.
The Cambria plays host to weekly events, with Dinner and Jazz taking over on Mondays. A jazz quartet fills the room with hypnotic sounds accompanied by a special guest vocalist. Fans are invited to enjoy any main course with a glass of wine or a Michelob beer for just £10.
Thursdays play host to some tongue-in-cheek fun with the weekly Quiz. The lively social atmosphere is accompanied by special offer meze selections that are perfect for sharing amongst your industrious quiz team.
The crystal chandeliers, art gallery furnishings and boudoir wallpaper make The Cambria a much-welcomed addition to Camberwell's colourful neighbourhoods. But most of all, The Cambria is a cosy local hangout. The friendly staff, impeccable food and fun atmosphere will always leave pub-goers with a lingering smile.
