Getting the Needle
Andrew Bujalski
Yet another small gem this debut made the top ten US critics' list and is worth pursuing while it is out.
Centring on disenchanted youth and those long and intimate awkward stretches of time the opening scene sums it all up as we watch a drunken 23 year old Marnie (Kate Dollenmayer) sitting in a seedy tattoo parlour avidly seeking some permanency in her life in the form of a tattoo. This foiled attempt by the unobliging tattoist - who fears she may throw up all over him - offsets the non-articulated, slacker efforts of her and her friends in the half-conscious world that follows, as she searches for meaning and purpose in her life.
An awkward, funny and impressive debut that is skilfully observant in a very apt way this is an authentic portrait of monosyllable youth today often referred to as graduates. A surprisingly joy to watch.
