At least 154 people have died from coronavirus in Southwark, according to data released by the Office of National Satistics (ONS), which lays bare how the virus has affected our borough.
The death toll, which covers the period from March 1 to April 17, is slightly higher as a proportion of the population than neighbouring Lambeth or Lewisham, at 108 deaths per 100,000 people.
But it is dwarfed by some of the capital’s most deprived areas, such as Newham, which has the highest rate in the capital at 144.3 deaths per 100,000 population.
The virus has been involved in around four out of ten of all deaths across the capital since the start of March, according to the department’s statisticians.
In a further breakdown of the data, analysts at the ONS broke down the borough into 33 areas, called ‘Middle Super Output Areas’.
The highest numbers of virus deaths have been recorded around Queen’s Road Peckham, with fifteen recorded Covid-related deaths, Surrey Quays and parts of Rotherhithe, (13) and London Bridge and West Bermondsey (11).
Only one area logged in Southwark has recorded no deaths up to April 17 from coronavirus: the area surrounding Southwark Street and Borough.
A number of areas have recorded one single death for the time period that the data covers, including what is designated by the census as Bermondsey North and Bermondsey East.
Analysts believe that the rate of coronavirus deaths is closely correlated with deprived areas, with those which are deprived experiencing double the fatalities compared to wealthy neighbourhoods.
“People living in more deprived areas have experienced COVID-19 mortality rates more than double those living in less deprived areas,” said Nick Stipe, head of health analysis at the ONS.
“General mortality rates are normally higher in more deprived areas, but so far COVID-19 appears to be taking them higher still.”
Separate data from the agency also reveals that of those who died in Southwark, the majority sadly passed away in hospitals.
At least 112 people have passed away in hospital, while 31 are recorded to have passed away in a care home.
Meanwhile ten residents are listed as having passed away from Covid-19 in their own home.
Queens Rd Peckham is the worst area in Southwark for deaths by Covid-19 as it is one of the most densely populated. Southwark Council must reconsider adding to that density with its plans for a huge Council office for over 600 staff and 2000 plus visitors a week on Queens Road/Asylum Rd. It will add to existing overcrowding at Queens Rd rail station, which has a single staircase and one platform. Already deemed unfit for purpose in a Council commissioned report in 2009, which it has since just ignored, last week transport experts advising the government said single stair stations will need a second one to separate the exit and entrance. What’s the betting Southwark Council says it is Transport for London’s problem.
“Surrey Quays and parts of Rotherhithe, (13) and London Bridge and West Bermondsey (11).”
I didn’t realise these are ‘deprived’ areas in Southwark.
Camberwell was highlighted during the lockdown as a place where the social distancing was being ignored . It was featured on Channel 4 News and in The Guardian . Camberwell has a majority black ethnicity .
When local residents contacted the local councillors , Harriet Harman ,Head of Southwark Council and the Mayor of Southwark our concerns were waved away . We suggested police should be brought to Camberwell to instal some control and this was refused saying that eventually people would get the idea . The Mayor of Southwark , in reply to a local councillors non speak just replied ” well done comrades” Meanwhile over in South Kensington and Knightsbridge the police were to be seen daily on their horses.
Now those people have paid the price for Southwark Councils inability to do absolutely nothing and are guilty of total negligence towards the community. This will be exposed
Diana I agree with your words there definitely was negligence towards the Black Community the headlines clearly indicated that. Others had been at the park ignoring the rules that was only for 1 hour exercise they was having parties and all sorts why wasn’t this reported too.
