112 AND COUNTING!

16 March 2012

Bermondsey girl Grace Jones has become the oldest person in the UK, and while it’s not exactly something to celebrate, given the sad passing of the previous holder of the title, it is still a remarkable achievement.

Just hearing that Grace was born in 1899 seems almost impossible to be true - consider that Queen Victoria was then on the throne. Consider also that Grace would have been a fourteen-year-old at the outbreak of World War One, and a middle-aged woman when World War Two began.

Still sprightly, and enjoying the occasional glass of sherry, Grace is cared for by neighours on her Bermondsey estate. A remarkable age for a remarkable woman.
