25 May 2012
A 27-year-old who assaulted a woman in a betting shop in Camberwell Green was granted bail ahead of his sentencing.
Security guards and police officers filled the back of court as Aradom Ghirmai, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act earlier this month, asked to be released from the Maudsley Hospital.
Dressed in a sports jacket and sunglasses, Ghirmai told the court he was not “sick”.
“Why was I sent to the Maudsley Hospital? “I’m a very healthy man,” he said.
Ghirmai appeared in court after he was found guilty of assaulting a woman in Betfred on February 4. The chair of the magistrate panel, Mrs Fleming, said the decision to hold him in the Maudsley was down to the doctors.
“We cannot go back on the decision made by the doctors,” she said. Though he must remain in hospital, Ghirami, of King James Street in Borough, was then granted bail until June 7 for a pre-sentence report to be completed.
