14 October 2011
I have to begin with the weather.
Earlier in the week when the warm sunshine was turning the leaves around Newmarket into flames of gold I was really looking forward to Cesarewitch day last Saturday. By Friday those golden leaves had become frozen brown missiles in their trillions carried at a million miles an hour on hurricane force winds so it was racing on the telly for me.
My mates who went said the crowd and the atmosphere was better than Cambridgeshire day which surprises me because the former was a much more pleasant day and on a cold day the wind howls across the Rowley mile and over the Devil’s Dyke. My own impression was that the crowd was substantially down on the same day last year and that is taking into account that Newmarket has been robbed of Champions Day one of the biggest days of its racing year.
