TO BEER OR NOT TO BEER? WHAT A SILLY QUESTION!

21 August 2008

LOVE GOING down the pub but fed up with the same old beer? Probably unlikely, but if you do fancy being adventurous, Southwark is hosting its own beer festival this month, writes Katie Rowe...

Running for fours days there's a chance for ale enthusiasts to indulge in a number of Brew Wharf’s different beers as over 20 cask ales will be available courteousy of a number of independent breweries.

Located right next to Borough Market, The Brew Wharf is part of Vinopolis, a venue containing a restaurant and bar that offers wine and whisky tours and tasting events.

The beer festival, in its second year, gives brewers from across the country a chance to offer Londoners a taste of their distinctive ales.

Some of the beverages on offer at the festival include Monsoon - a summer Indian Pale Ale of low volume but a pleasant hop taste; Midnight Bell - made with roast and chocolate malts it's a full-bodied ale that's dark and rich; Guzzler - a crisp and refreshing with pale malt taste; Yorkshire Terrier, a premium bitter with a rich, creamy malt and full hop taste; and No7 -with toffee malt flavours and smooth hop bitterness.

In addition if you take a particular liking to any of the ales you can bring a bit of Bristol's, York's or Leeds’ finest beverages back home with you in a carry keg.

All ales are priced at £3 and bottled beers start from a reasonable £3 to a more extravagant £7. There will also be a raffle and barbeque, depending on the weather. The festival begins on August 22 and ends on August 25. Entry is free.
