DOES YOUR bum look like two wobbly cottage cheese cannonballs?
Probably not that extreme. Yet most women are affected by cellulite to some degree. But now there is a new treatment that claims to reduce the appearance of the dreaded orange peel skin, writes Damien Gayle...
Cellulite affects most women after puberty, but its appearance is unrelated to being overweight. Average size and even underweight women are just as likely to be affected. Just ask Hollywood starlet Mischa Barton.
Although some men do get cellulite, it is far more common amongst women. Women's connective tissue is very inflexible so, as women naturally gain weight, their fat cells expand and tend to bulge up towards the surface of the skin. In men, not only is there generally less fat on the thighs, but the outer layer of skin is thicker and hides what's going on in the fat below.
Hormones play an important role in the appearance of cellulite, particularly female hormone oestrogen which seems to initiate and aggravate cellulite production. Other hormones including insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenalin, thyroid hormones, and prolactin have all been shown to contribute to its development.
Experts think that lifestyle related factors can also contribute to the appearance of cellulite: a poor diet with too much fat, carbs, salt, or too little fibre can all cause cellulite; smoking can inhibit the circulatory system and help create conditions where cellulite is more likely to appear; and, although cellulite is unrelated to general body weight, a lack of exercise can lead to an excess of those hormones related to it.
Endermologie Lipomassage, available at Tooley Street’s Stress Exchange, by London Bridge, is a new technique approved by the US Food and Drug Administration that claims to be clinically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Patients are dressed in a body stocking and motorized rollers are run the length of the body. Controlled suction gently lifts and rolls the patient's skin, deeply massaging affected areas to increase the blood flow and stimulate the lymphatic system.
The makers claim that the effects can be seen in the first month with just six-eight sessions, although they recommend a course of ten-fifteen sessions for best results. The treatment will, they claim, give skin a 'new lease of life' by stimulating the production of collagen to make skin grow stronger and denser.
Unfortunately, although the treatment can help with topical relief of the visible effects of cellulite, it's no cure, and your dimples will eventually return. No cosmetic procedure can promise permanent relief from orange peel skin. Until then we're just going to have to learn to live with it.
