EVERYONE HAS recycling drummed into them by now. Separate the paper from the plastics; don’t put in the bottle tops and so on. But who would think of recycling their old furniture? asks Madeleine Lindh...

Just take a walk along Choumert Road in Peckham and you’ll find two women who have done it for you; recovering dodgy old furniture and turning them into something trendy.

"I bought the building, and initially wanted to open a shoe shop," owner Naomi Sylvester said. She continued: "Then I realised how great the expenses would be and instead I decided on this."

Amanda Kelly, Naomi's friend and partner in the firm, added: "We hadn't done anything like it before, but got books on furniture restoration and upholstering and have learnt from there."

The pair are very concerned with the environmental aspect of their business and although they often have to travel far to buy their furniture, they rarely go out especially for that.

Naomi explained: "We didn't want to pollute the planet with more crap. That wouldn't leave a very good carbon footprint!". She continued: "We often pick stuff up when we're on camping trips."
