WOMAN ACCUSED OF £8k MUSIC THEFT

A Camberwell woman accused of stealing £8,000 worth of musical instruments from a Bankside pub was held in custody at Tower Bridge Magistrates’ Court last week.

Sonya Moys of Draco Street pleaded not guilty to stealing a case containing a cor anglais and an oboe from a woman drinking in the Anchor Bankside pub on September 25 last year.
Moys, 39, was said to have been identified by CCTV images as being in the pub at the time of the theft but denied taking the instruments.

The court heard how the defendant had a string of previous convictions for thefts, which she carried out to fund an ongoing problem with drug addiction.

Arguing that Moys should be released on bail, her lawyers said that she had been attempting to get help for her addiction after her older sister had been diagnosed with cancer a few months ago. She has since become her sister's carer and has begun taking a course of methadone to fight her drug problem.

This was said to be her first serious attempt to quit drugs in twenty years. "She is getting help for the problem that caused her to be such a dishonest person in the past."

However, in remanding her in custody, District Judge Timothy Stone said: "I take a view that there are substantial grounds to believe you will commit further offences or fail to attend."
