FREE JUNGLE TRIP

16 August 2007

Word of mouth had spread across the capital long before the reviews had created interest for The Jungle Book at Scoop, so I arrived to an already packed theatre and only able to get a seat due to the wonderful PR people saving one for me.

The full house was justified as we had all come to watch Steam Industry's version of The Jungle Book with all the brilliant songs and characters that the last three generations have grown up on.

Okay, it hasn't got the 2-Dimensional Disney look but instead has real-life, 3-D action that goes on all around you.
Steam Industry's annual run at Scoop has become quite an institution and you won't find as much fun, entertainment and feelgood factor for free anywhere else.

Adapted more from Kipling's book that the Disney film, it is an excellent show that kept every kid goggle-eyed in awe and everyone else buzzing on their own nostalgia thing and singing along to Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You.

King Louie was my favourite at 12 and is still my favourite now.  Paul Critoph doesn't have the bluesy, soul voice of Louis Prima but he has everything else to bring the monkey to life.  As do all the cast.  Shere Khan is just as frightening as he ever was while Kaa the snake is still as slippery. And I still get a tear in my eye when Mowgli goes off to the man village!

The costume designer deserves an award, as does the puppet-master.  This is a fantastic show in fantastic surroundings.  Don't miss this short season of open-air plays.
