120 DAY SENTENCE FOR STEALING CHEESE

27 May 2009

A hankering for mature cheese has resulted in a Bermondsey man getting sentenced to 120 days in prison.

Lee Travers, 25, of Crimscott Street, took four blocks of cheddar worth £20 from Iceland in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre on May 12.

Travers pleaded guilty to the offence, which turned out to be the latest in a long list stretching back to 1997.

DJ Stone was clearly exasperated by the repeated offending and asked his defence team how they were going to handle this. He added: "I can see you when you are 50 when the same speech is given by your defence team. I don't know the answer."

The judge added that Travers received his sentence for persistent offending and that he will serve at least half of his term
