Malcolm Tillyer, Southwark Borough Commander explains:
Much of the Metropolitan Police building estate is old and unfit for purpose for policing in the 21st Century. The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) is responsible for all police buildings and its vision is for new purpose built patrol bases and custody centres across London, including Southwark borough.
However, significant funding needs to be found and the MPA have decided that some buildings will be sold to fund the new builds. Numerous police stations across London have been identified for potential closure and three are in Southwark borough - East Dulwich, Rotherhithe and Camberwell.
The commitment that has been given is that no police stations will close until Safer Neighbourhoods bases are in place, with at least the same number of front counter services as at present. The plan is to have eight Safer Neighbourhoods bases in Southwark and six of these to have front counters. I give my commitment that there will be full consultation in relation to their location and use - I want them to be accessible to the local communities. We have three 24-hour stations on the borough (no other London borough has more) and there is no plan to close any of them.
These proposed changes are described, in detail, in Southwark borough's Asset Management Plan. The plan is published on our website and copies are available at all police stations on the borough, public libraries and the Town Hall. I welcome feedback from members of the community. There will also be a public meeting, to discuss the proposals, towards the end of February 2008 - details will be published in due course.
