STANSFELD STAY JOINT TOP DESPITE DRAW

26 September 2008

Hollands & Blair 1  Stansfeld 1

STANSFELD MAINTAINED there unbeaten run with a hard fought draw against a battling Hollands & Blair side at Star Meadow Sports Ground, but left feeling they had been robbed of a victory, when a controversial decision in the 94th minute led to a Hollands & Blair late equalizer.

Talking to manager Danny Steele after the game he said blunders are being made at every level by referees.
“Because we are not paid it doesn't hurt any less when you feel you have been robbed.”

Stansfeld’s natural flowing game was not suited to the bumpy pitch and it was Hollands & Blair who had the better of the early exchanges and Stansfeld were thankful of a commanding performance from keeper Ricky Ward, who dealt with the aerial threat posed from Hollands & Blair.

It was a full fifteen minutes before Stansfeld threatened and then they were unlucky not to take a lead, when George Lowes crashed a left footed effort against the post with the ‘keeper well beaten. With that effort giving them confidence, Stansfeld began to start pressing and had a better end to a goalless first half.

Stansfeld started the second half full of running and went near from successive corners through Joe Bacon and Harvey Gayle. In the 65th minute a Jamie Turner free-kick was well saved by the Hollands & Blair keeper down low to his left. Ten minutes later and Stansfeld took the lead - a cross from Terry Forsyth was met by Harvey Gayle with a firm header towards goal, but Harry Draper got up to deflect the effort into the other corner.

Stansfeld looked like they had held on to their lead and were leaving with all three points.

But in the 93rd minute a free kick was headed out by the Hollands & Blair centre forward. The linesman gave a goal kick but the referee overruled him and gave a corner. Several players exchanged words with the referee but he never changed his mind; from the resulting corner Hollands & Blair equalized and Stansfeld were left to rue the referee's dodgy late decision.

MOM - Ricky Ward (a commanding performance)

Next Home Game - 27-9-08 - Milton & Fulston Utd
