A 22-year-old Peckham man almost talked himself into prison for criminal damage, before a judge ordered that he seek legal advice and a psychiatric examination before entering a plea.

Lance Bryan, of Kelly Avenue, demanded to represent himself and to explain why he destroyed two expensive fire doors at a Centrepoint hostel back in December.

Before the charge was put to the youngster, Bryan insisted: "I do the talking, I represent myself."
But DJ Shamoon Somjee said: "These are very serious offences. You could go to prison."
"Is it?" Bryan responded. "But there was a cause you know, a cause why I done it."

Up to £1800 worth of damage was caused at Christchurch House, Chancel Street, in Blackfriars on December 15.
Bryan, who had previously been thrown out of court for yawning by District Judge Somjee, begrudgingly accepted DJ Somjee's order to see a psychiatrist and to have the case put back to May 25 and stormed out of court.
