BIRTHDAY PARTY AT GLOBE

BIRTHDAY PARTY AT GLOBE

18 April 2008

The Globe celebrates Shakespeare's birthday with a host of weekend events on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April as well as launching the 2008 Theatre Season Totus Mundus with a stunning birthday celebration by the River Thames on Wednesday 23 April. Events are supported by the Greater London Authority as part of their St George's Day celebrations.

On Saturday 19 April, Shakespeare's Globe, in partnership with Phoebus Cart, continues the tradition of Mark Rylance's Sonnet Walks. Walkers can buy a ticket for two tours of Tudor London: one starting in Westminster Abbey, and one from the site of Shakespeare's theatre in Shoreditch. Twelve sonneteers will entertain walkers as they stroll to Shakespeare's Globe.

Sunday 20 April sees the Globe throw open its doors between 12noon and 5pm for the annual Birthday Open Day.

The event is free to all and will include the internationally renowned Footsbarn Theatre Company performing in the Globe Exhibition. Footsbarn will be giving the public a taster of their anarchic new show A Shakespeare Party which will be specifically devised for the Globe Theatre between 23 - 25 May. Other activities in the exhibition include a chance to watch a screening of the Globe's 2007 production of Othello, take part in costume dressings, and listen to Globe musicians. Workshops will be available from Globe practitioners including a playwriting master-class by Ché Walker, whose play The Frontline will be premièring at the Globe this summer and an interactive cake decorating workshop for children. The Globe is giving participants the opportunity to tread the boards in the theatre and say a few lines from the bard onstage, as well as take part in a giant game of pass the parcel.

The climax to these celebrations will be a special Birthday Event on the River Thames at 6pm on Wednesday 23 April. A mini Elizabethan theatre will be transported up the Thames by boat from Butler's Wharf to Shakespeare's Globe with musicians and performers entertaining crowds along the riverbank. The Globe will then combine this special Birthday celebration with a production of William Shakespeare's most searching tragedy, King Lear, tickets for which can be purchased from the box office.
