THE HAWK WILL SWOOP

This week I want to talk to you about four races. Those four races are two in which our Racing Club filly Southwark Newsflash ran - one at Yarmouth and one at Wolverhampton and one which our new two year old filly Southwark Newshawk ran at Yarmouth last Thursday and one which she probably will run at Wolverhampton next Monday.

You will no doubt recall when the Flash ran her first race at Yarmouth she missed the break and proceeded to chase after the other hosses very gamely. That is pretty much what Newshawk did last Thursday. She did not miss the break as badly as Flash did but she still ran on gamely.

The difference was that the opposition faced by the Hawk was very much stiffer than that Flash took on. All the two year olds in Hawk's race are bound for Royal Ascot, including our own trainer's Avec Moi.

On the subject of that race I arrived at Yarmouth only to walk into the mother of a bull and cow about jockeys. We were well set up with Tom McLoughlan but Mrs Dunnett had booked John Egan to ride Avec Moi.

She was having a right handbags with trainer Tom Margarson because he had demanded that Egan should ride his hoss in the race. Margarson got his own way because he had Egan lined up to ride for him in last Saturday's 2000 Guineas but I had to spend a good hour calming our trainer down. We went up against a red hot three to one on favourite Thomas Baines trained by Michael bell and ridden by Jamie Spencer.

It all went titties up and the jolly boiled over before the race and we with our very humble Newshawk which cost less than one hundredth of most of the runners took them all on.

Our lass did not miss the break but was tapped for toe in the first two furlongs. Once she got the hang of things she started to reel them in. After Flash did much the same in her first race at Yarmouth she went to Wolverhampton for her next race and we piled into her at 66-1.

My sister's son, my nephew, got on her at 100-1 that night and we did not have enough pockets to carry home our winnings. I put mine in a Tesco bag and my nephew stuffed his down the front of his shirt.

So the stage is set for an action replay at Wolverhampton next Monday afternoon.
I cannot say for sure that Hawk will run at Wolves because she is also entered for Yarmouth on the same afternoon.  If it rains we shall run her at Yarmouth on the turf. If it stays dry we shall run her on the all weather surface at Wolves. The way the weather is looking at the moment it is most likely that we shall go to the Midlands track.

I shall be having a very substantial bet on her to get into the place money but it is very important that we have a field of eight or more because I think first or second place is beyond her until she gets more experience but she is perfectly capable of running into third place at a huge price just like Flash did.

The other thing we have to take into consideration is that she will be running over only five furlongs while Flash went over six. My gut feeling is that six will be her best distance.
However, I think she can tread in Flash's footsteps and leave the bookies reeling.
