You are here: Rotherhithe \ Sport \ SURREY FINALLY CHALK UP FIRST WIN
11 May 2009
Friends Provident Trophy - Surrey lost by 1 run to Durham; Surrey beat Yorkshire by 63 runs (D/L method)Surrey's season finally got going at the fifth time of asking when the Kennington outfit easily overcame Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Monday.
However only a day before they came within a cat’s whisker of notching up a much needed win, but blew a winning position after a ton by the evergreen Mark Ramprakash.
Needing only five off the final over, and just two off the final two balls, Ian Blackwell took the wickets of Grant Elliot and then Jon Batty to secure the north east outfit an improbable victory.
That disappointing effort was not allowed to fester in the mind, as the Brown Caps returned to the field against Yorkshire at Headingley the next day.
The away side accumulated a respectable total of 184 off 47 overs in difficult conditions, thanks largely to a half century by Matt Spriegel and late order efforts from Gary Wilson and Chris Schofield.
The wily leg spinner then proved just how good a score Surrey had set by picking up three wickets for just nineteen runs, building on good early work by Andre Nel. Grant Elliot also helped himself to four wickets as the Tykes fell well short of their revised total.
Speaking after Monday's defeat of Yorkshire, Surrey's manager Chris Adams hoped the form would continue into the four day game. He said: "This (the game against Middlesex) is our last four day game for a while so I want to make sure we put in an absolutely fantastic performance.
"Middlesex are a very strong side who have clearly not had the start to the four day season they would have wanted and will be looking to prove a point against their local rivals.
We must be on our game at all times to ensure we come away with the win and end the first phase of our LV Championship campaign on the right foot."
