STANSFELD CLINCH DERBY

6 November 2008

STANSFELD RETURNED to winning ways with a hard fought victory against high flying Lewisham Borough at Oxford Road.

Stansfeld started up the slope and were soon into their stride in the terrible wet conditions, with a combination of quick short passing and plenty of running proving the key on the heavy pitch.

In the tenth minute Danny McKone forced the Lewisham keeper into a smart save with a crisp shot from 20yards. With Tony Saunders and Harry Draper bossing the midfield, Stansfeld had most of the early play but could not get in any more goal bound efforts. But in the 30th minute their dominance was rewarded; a sloppy clearance by the Lewisham keeper was met by captain Neil Thurgood, whose 40yard header was right into the path of Terry Forsyth who controlled, looked up and then floated the ball into the empty net with the keeper stranded.

Lewisham tried to hit back but got no change from the Stansfeld defence that was well marshalled by Sid Mitchell. Most of the play was in the middle of the park and neither side created any more chances before half time.

In the early stages of the second half Stansfeld began to produce some of their best football of the season so far and were unlucky not to increase their lead in the 60th minute. A flowing move down the right between right back Ben Mulrooney, Harry Draper and Danny Wardle ended with a fine cross that was met with a powerful header by Stansfeld's marauding left back Joe Bacon but the Lewisham keeper was equal to it with a top drawer save.

Man of the match: Sid Mitchell Stansfeld kept up the pressure and doubled their lead in the 75th minute; a cross in from the right by Jamie Turner was met by Harvey Gayle with an acrobatic overhead kick into the top corner. With the clock ticking down manager Danny Steele introduced new signing Paul Hewett who settled in well and denied Lewisham any ball.

MOM Sid Mitchell (Playing the part in both his acting career & football career).
