Ever fancied diving but were too anxious about the dangers or costs? asks Philippa Jenkins...

Well the time may have come for you to throw away those worries and jump into the unknown at The Seven Islands Leisure Centre, Rotherhithe with the British Sub Aqua Club.

From the very first time you breathe underwater, scuba diving will continue to challenge and surprise you. Many divers say that it is life-changing and, with the sense of achievement that comes with learning to dive, it is easy to see why.

The Rotherhithe branch of the biggest diving club in the world has been running since 1956 and is one of the only groups to still maintain a regular pool-training session.

Scuba diving will appeal to anyone who is reasonably fit and with a spirit of adventure. With the right training and support from the BSAC it is also easy and fun to learn.

People may be more familiar with the PADI diving qualifications but BSAC diving officer Kim Thomas explained the difference between the BSAC and the PADI courses.

He said: "Unlike PADI, where you can complete your first level - Open Water Diver - in a few days, BSAC ask you to join the club for a year and they will train you from pool to sheltered open water, to progressively deeper sea dives.”
For those wishing to enjoy the social aspect of diving in a group, as well as having the reassurance of others being in the same boat, a BSAC is the perfect way to discover the underwater world.

Once you have joined the club there are lots of offers open to members – not just the diving tuition.
You will be able to dive all over the world at reduced costs and access regular diving trips in the UK once qualified.

The course at The Seven Islands Leisure Centre is held once a week on Wednesday evenings at 8pm for lectures and then 9pm for pool training.

A Try Dive will cost you £10 and if you decide to join after that, the club will discount the price from your first year's membership.

For more information call the BSAC on 0151 350 6200 or The Seven Islands Leisure Centre on 020 7237 3296.
