4 July 2008
DAVID HAYE now knows that he has arrived in the heavyweight division - he has been forced to reject a challenge from a low ranked American with the nick name of 'Two Gunz'.
Monte Barrett - previously considered to be a washed up 37-year-old - catapulted his way back into the Heavyweight reckoning with a shock victory over fellow American Tye 'Big Sky' Fields in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Then, in the time honoured Vegas tradition, Barrett - who holds losses against a host of Heavyweight contenders such as Wladimir Klitschko, Hasim Rahman and Nikolay Valuev - turned his attention to the future, calling out Bermondsey's Hayemaker from ringside at the famous Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
"I want David Haye next," he said. "I just slayed one giant in Tye Fields and now I'm ready to go across the pond and beat that big Brit.
"I know I am better than him and will knock him flat on his back. Haye is a David Telesco look-alike and we're ready to Roy Jones him."
When the 'News' spoke to Haye's manager Adam Booth this week, he made it clear that other than once again raising the international profile of his fighter, Barrett's challenge was meaningless in their forward planning because he was not ranked in the top ten of any of the major international sanctioning bodies.
"If he's not top ten then it's not a consideration", said Booth simply. "There's no point in him shouting his mouth off. If people want to fight David Haye then they shouldn't be shouting their mouth off in the press, they should be calling me!"
Haye’s standing has also been boosted by ex world cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson - now a top pundit on Sky Sports -who has ranked him as the second best boxer in the world pound for pound, ahead of Welsh world champion Joe Calzaghe. Writing this week, Nelson said: “I know I'm bias towards cruiserweights but I was around when there was a lot of decent fighters and he was easily the best of them all. “Again, he's pulled it out of the bag, he's been into people's backyards and won; he's taken on mismatches and won and when there's been serious question marks against him he's answered them. The only person whose opinion didn't waver in the lead-up to that fight was David and that is the sort of thing that sorts the men out from the boys.”
